Amy Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to Melbourne in 2000 to study fine art at the Victorian College of Arts majoring in painting. She has worked across a range of creative industries including theatre design, art directing, interior decoration, graphic design and teaching.
Depicting organic matter via idiosyncratic means, Amy Kim’s work integrates the real with the surreal. Through the inclusion of interlocking geometric shapes and bold, tenacious colour usage, figures, faces, scenes and settings are characterised and interpreted. While the work is primarily abstract in form, the meaning is not, as the multidimensional condition of being is rendered and the harmony of life’s inequalities is observed and examined. Amy’s initial ideas are largely associated with daily living and her works are frequent reflections of her observations and emotional reactions to these occurrences.
Combining the perfect, congruous blend of constructivism, fauvism, expressionism and surrealism, Amy’s work pays homage to the commonalities that exist between these incredibly groundbreaking and distinguishing styles.
The artist currently lives and works in Melbourne, Australia.
