Jacopo Tonziello

  • Italian,

  • Bio

After working in the field of mechanical engineering for a decade, Jacopo Tonziello ventured into the art world as an adult by starting to draw with coloured pencils. Initially focusing on surrealistic landscapes inspired by the Australian artist Reg Mombassa, he later transitioned to hyperrealism as a way to improve his technical skills and was immediately fascinated by how a meticulous use of colours could reproduce vivid compositions.

Tonziello thinks the potential of coloured pencils has not yet been fully explored, as the medium has traditionally been considered something for kids, students and beginners in the art world - a basic tool that is easy to handle before moving to more advanced techniques like acrylic or oil painting. His goal is to approach every drawing as an opportunity to stretch the use of the medium and push outside of his own comfort zone into the realm of hyperrealism, adding, where possible, a personal message.

Jacopo Tonziello participated in the London Art Biennale 2021 and was awarded a certificate of artistic merit by The Pinacothèque after participating in the Luxembourg Art Prize 2021.

The artist currently lives and works in MiIan, Italy.
