Leonardo Vargas

  • Bio

“I have always been fascinated by how painting can offer a different comprehension of things, a glimpse into an unknown universe. It amazes me how a good painting is capable to find its way to places where other media cannot go, how it can make the invisible visible.”

The work of Leonardo Vargas focuses on painting as a process and a form of representation that deals with specific codes. The artist actively delves into the mechanisms of production of the pictorial image, questioning the practice and exploring different forms of (re)presentation. He often works with found images from various sources such as the canon of art history, photographic archives, fashion magazines, or advertising.

Through his work, Vargas launches a visual inquiry into how these images were produced and what they represent. The resultant artwork can have an array of subjects, such as the passing of time or different aspects of our humanity. Beyond the subject, however, his main goal is to establish a dynamic relationship with the viewer through the image.
