This series of paintings explores the materiality of paint as a substance onto itself. By focusing on elemental characteristics such as shadow and light, depth, weight, and color the arrangement gains a substance that exists in the field of tension between painting and sculpture. All references to concrete objects have been removed (with the exception of titles). The intention in doing so is a move towards enshrining the present moment, the moment of looking, as most important, as opposed to first qualifying what is seen through a veil of art historical or psychological ideals. Is it possible to create an interaction between the viewer and the viewed which does not depend on the understanding of a set of abstract ideas? What, if anything, can the experience of being in the present offer in the way of a deeper understanding of what is viewed and of the one viewing it? Savage nations, uneducated people, and children have a great predilection for vivid colours. - Johann Wolfgang Goethe, 1810
